Chris Denovan
Chris Denovan is a South African visual artist whose work explores identity, belonging, and the complexities of human connection through contemporary portraiture. In this new body of work, groups of young individuals gather in moments of defiance, kinship, uncertainty, and becoming. These groups do not simply occupy space; they generate it, creating an energetic field of gesture, tension, and rhythm. Each scene functions as a kind of social choreography, where subtle, unspoken narratives emerge between bodies in states of connection or fragmentation.
The figures exist within deliberately abstracted landscapes, inspired in part by the psychological environments of Francis Bacon. Like Bacon, Denovan uses abstraction not as backdrop but as emotional architecture: a blurred, fractured terrain that mirrors the instability, dislocation, and flux of contemporary existence.
These unstable spaces heighten the presence of the figures, isolating them while amplifying the emotional charge of the scene. The result is a world that feels both familiar and estranged — grounded yet dissolving.
Together, the works invite viewers to consider how meaning is formed collectively — how individuals negotiate belonging, how groups generate their own internal narratives, and how identity is shaped by the shifting landscapes we inhabit, both real and psychological.
