Annamieke Engelbrecht

Where Patterns Begin to Emerge

To look at an Annamieke Engelbrecht work is to step into the role of the observer. Like a scientist peering through a microscope, the viewer searches for structure within what initially appears fragmented — tracing lines, recognising patterns, and attempting to make sense of how these elements connect. Yet what emerges is never fixed. The work resists complete resolution, holding something just beyond full comprehension.

This impulse to search for order is deeply human. Throughout history, we have looked outward, attempting to understand the vastness of the universe while remaining firmly within it. We are both participant and observer — part of the very system we are trying to comprehend. From early attempts to map the stars and build meaning through story, to the patterns we form in our own behaviour and thinking, the human mind continually seeks to connect the dots. Even in the present day, this instinct plays out on social media, where we construct and refine a perceived version of our lives — repeating visual cues and alter ego behaviours in an effort to create a sense of coherence and control.

Engelbrecht’s work operates within this same condition. At its core is a clear visual language built from geometric shapes — lines, planes, and structured forms that intersect and shift across the surface. These shapes are not arbitrary. They echo the patterns we recognise in the natural world — from the spiral of a seashell, whose expanding form follows the logic of the Fibonacci sequence, where each increment builds upon the previous and converges toward a consistent proportion, to the familiar image of an atom, with its central point and orbiting paths, and the predictable movement of planets. These recurring structures appear across vastly different scales, suggesting an underlying visual logic that connects the organic, the scientific, and the cosmic. Alongside this, more subtle patterns govern human behaviour, belief, mythology, and religion. Across centuries, these systems have relied on symbols and repeated forms to make sense of what lies beyond understanding. There is a sense of something being traced or constructed, yet always remaining incomplete — a reflection of our own attempt to recognise order within a system we can never fully step outside of.

Working across both painting and sculpture, Engelbrecht moves between observation and construction. On canvas, structures are layered and implied through colour, line, and form. In her sculptural works, these same systems are brought into physical space, where balance, direction, and tension are tested in real terms. These forms feel less like static objects and more like trajectories held in suspension, where movement and structure exist simultaneously.

As a visual medium, her work occupies a powerful position. Much of human understanding operates beyond words, and it is here that Engelbrecht’s practice resonates most strongly. Through abstraction and form, she creates a space where viewers are invited not simply to look, but to question — to engage with ideas that sit just beyond language, and to reflect on their own place within a larger and ever-expanding system.

It speaks to something fundamental: our human need to recognise patterns — in the universe, and in ourselves — even when we can’t fully understand them. And so we return to where we began. In observing these works, in tracing their structures and searching for meaning, the question shifts. It is no longer only about what is being observed, but about the act of observation itself. Who is the observer?
